There are SO many great ideas out there on how to announce your pregnancy to the people that you love most. I, myself, definitely went down the Google rabbit hole, searching for ideas my first time around. It is undoubtably a momentous occasion, so it makes total sense why parents want to make the announcement special. Whether the news will come as a total shock or highly anticipated… family and friends are bound to be excited.

Tailoring your announcement to fit your loved ones' personalities can make the big reveal even more memorable - not just for them, but for you too! This is how I went about sharing the news of my first pregnancy with my family and, while it made things a bit more complex, I wouldn't change it for anything. Below are the ways that my husband and I did this - hopefully it'll help spark some ideas for you!

For Mom: The Grandma Mug

I opted to wait until 12 weeks to share the news with family and, luck would have it, that fell right around my mom's birthday! For years I'd been getting her glassware that had "Mom" on it -- to the extent that it was an ongoing joke. This is where the idea was born: get her another mug, but this time it will say "Grandma." I included a picture from our latest sonogram within the mug for good measure.

The plan worked perfectly! I handed her the gift bag, and she immediately said, "what is it, another mug?" When she pulled out the mug and saw the text was different than she had expected, her face went still. She reached for her glasses with urgency and, once she realized what it said, the tears were pouring!

Advice if you go this route: Maybe let the other people in the room in on the surprise in advance! My brother and step-dad were quite perplexed until they got the chance to see the mug.

For In-Laws: Bananagrams with a Twist

My husband and I regularly have game nights with his parents. One of both mine and my mother-in-law's favorites is Bananagrams. If you're unfamiliar, it's a bit like Scrabble but instead of all building off of one set of words... you build off of your own!

We came up with the plan to "play the game" and use the pieces to spell out the words "We Are Pregnant." This was a bit of a gamble, of course, because you'd need to draw the right letters to make it happen!

Our first round, I was so close, just missing an E! So my husband slid one to me under the table... which would definitely be cheating if we were playing for real! I called "Bananagrams" to end the game early and read out the words. Both my mother-in-law and father-in-law needed a few seconds to realize we were for-real pregnant, but once it clicked it was such fun.

Advice if you go this route: Maybe wait to call Bananagrams until all chips have been drawn! I called it as soon as I was able to spell out the words I had planned, but that's not technically how the game works... and my family is competitive :)

For Dad: Travel Slideshow with a Bonus Image

I often attribute my love of the mountains to my dad. As such, he was eager to see pictures from our latest travels! So, we had him over for dinner and shared pictures from our trip on the TV. We took our time, pointing out details along the way... sharing everything about our favorite hike.

Then, to conclude, I said "and this was our favorite part of the trip!" before flipping to a photo from our sonogram.

My dad squinted a bit, paused, and then with emotion in his voice asked, "are you... pregnant?" It was such a sweet and sentimental moment to share with my ol' man.

Advice if you go this route: Test screen sharing beforehand! We had some technical difficulties at the start. All went totally fine, but it added to the nervous feelings!

For Nieces & Nephews: Let Them In On the Secret

Last on the list, but certainly not least! We have two nieces and one nephew, ranging from 6 to 11 years old at the time. We knew it'd be especially fun to share the news with them, as well as with their parents, but struggled coming up with an idea on how!

Finally, the idea came to us: we'd let the kids know first, and then let them be the ones to announce to their parents! As it so happened, we had missed the family get-together for my nephew's birthday... To make up for it, we asked my sister- and brother-in-law if we could take the kids out for a sweet treat.

We took them for ice cream, and let them know the secret while we enjoyed a sweet treat. Be prepared: the questions kids ask when you're pregnant are all over the place!

Then, when we got back to their house, the three of them were all racing to get out of the car to run indoors and tell their parents. The announcement, paired with the sugar, led to a high-energy night with family!

For the Masses: A Classic Onesie & Sonogram Photo, but Make It Custom

The photo at the top of this blog is what I used to make the widespread announcement to my friends and family on social media. This was a pretty classic approach - I know I didn't revolutionize anything here! But wanting to make things a little more "us," I used my Cricut to create a unique onesie. Since it was up in the air for a long time whether we would have kids, I added the words "plot twist" to the onesie. Then, I included a sprig of eucalyptus and a pair of lil' baby shoes to make it complete. I was quite happy with it!

I cherish these memories so dearly, and I hope the same for you as you share the big news with your loved ones! No matter what you decide - go big or keep things simple - it'll be perfect.
